Lonar
World’s third largest crater formed by a meteor impact centuries ago gives Lonar its identity. Lonar Crater, a sea of green surroundings by a variety of trees, shrubs and bushes amuses not just tourists but also scientists and geologists. Lonar is home to numerous species of migratory birds and animals like chinkara, egrets, white necked storks, tailorbirds and robins. Lonar’s cultural heritage is lined with ancient temples and relics. Besides Gomukh Temple along the rim of the crater; Daitya Sudan Temple and the Dhar Temple Complex a short distance away are a treat for tourists. One of the best examples of Hemadpanti style of construction, the Daitya Sudan temple is built in the form of an asymmetrical star. This Vishnu temple is almost 1500 years old and has detailed carvings on its entire surface, elaborating stories from the Puranas.
